Ellen Hanson

Founder

Ellen Hanson's comfortable, uncluttered, and beautiful interiors are always a unique visualization of her clients' own tastes and lifestyles. Vibrant use of color and fresh ways of combining hues and textures are hallmarks of Ellen's spaces, and green, sustainable principles are a foundation of her approach.

Ellen's education in Art History at Cornell University, with coursework in such diverse areas as organic gardening and biology, in no way prepared her for designing interiors. She found her way to interior design through a circuitous route, from embroidery workshops with Erica Wilson at her Nantucket studio to an internship at Philadelphia’s Fabric Workshop. Ellen’s curiosity and open mind push her design practice to continually evolve, as do her travels throughout the world in search of inspiration and unique furnishings, accessories, and fabrics.

Ellen opened her eponymous interiors firm on Madison Avenue in 1991 and has since overseen projects ranging from hospitality to high-end residential. Ellen is a passionate advocate of craftsmanship and is constantly seeking inspiration and honing her vision through an ongoing study of the arts.

Ellen now calls Sarasota, Florida her home. Ellen serves as a trustee on the Board of the Foundation for National Public Radio, and on the Board of WUSF Public Radio in Tampa, Florida.

I find beauty in the unusual and imperfect, and, I love using vintage and handmade pieces in my work whenever possible. Incorporating the embodied magic of craftspeople from all disciplines is one of the greatest gifts I can offer our clients.

Casey Stephenson

Director of Pansy Bayou

A Philadelphia native, Casey chose to head South to the land of tropical breezes to acquire a Bachelor’s in Fine Art from Ringling College of Art in Sarasota where she studied illustration. A love of figure drawing and impressionist art lead her to many museums to be inspired by the great line-makers of the ages. Casey shook up her fine arts background and began styling fashion shoots for TV, print and advertising and this path lead her back to the Northeast where she worked for Lucky Magazine in NYC.

Once again warm weather beckoned, and Casey returned to the lush palms of Sarasota. After establishing herself locally as a creative stylist shooting interiors and architecture, the opportunity to join the Pansy Bayou team was irresistible.

In addition to shaping the Pansy Bayou brand and retail experience, as Studio Director Casey supports design work in all locales. She oversees every detail of social media for the Sarasota studio so that it feels exclusively ‘Gulf Coast Modern’. You might find Casey clipping plants on the side of the road while she is shooting all photography for Pansy Bayou. Not to worry, she never forages on private property (wink). Wave chasing, sketching, and Gulf Coast flora are a few of her outside passions.

Lisa Hargus

Pansy Bayou Co-Conspirator

Growing up with a real estate developer mother and an architect father, Lisa often snuck onto construction sites, spending hours afterward doodling new homes. A decade or so later, Lisa got her BA in Psychology, then took the obvious next step: she started a theater company in New York City. One night at a party, she found herself next to Ellen Hanson and the two quickly discovered a shared love of design and sustainability. Lisa leapt at Ellen's offer of an internship. Today, Lisa is EHD's director and senior designer. A proud partner in the studio's dedication to sustainable luxury, Lisa is LEED certified.

Lisa takes great joy in listening to her clients’ needs and desires and then, with them, forging a path to create a space that is uniquely theirs. A true collaborator, Lisa’s visual and verbal abilities are equally keen. While keeping in mind her clients’ story, she sees what a space can be for them, and can skillfully communicate how they’ll get there.

Lisa lives to hunt down beautiful new (or old) resources and accepts any design challenge with zeal. When she’s kicking back, this Tex-pat sings in her husband’s country band, throws last minute parties and seeks out the best Mexican food wherever she finds herself.
